“Mother Teresa: No Greater Love, [is a] new documentary produced by the Knights of Columbus in partnership with the Missionaries of Charity, had its U.S. premiere on Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine in Washington, D.C.”

“Introducing the documentary, which first premiered at the Vatican on Aug. 31, Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly said he hoped it would help a new generation of Catholics reflect on Mother Teresa’s relevance in the 21st century.  ‘The Lord raises up particular saints at particular times for a particular reason,’ the supreme knight observed.  ‘It’s beneficial for all of us to think — why has the Lord raised Mother Teresa up at this point in time in our lives and in the life of the Church, in the life of the world?’

The film was shown at the conclusion of the inaugural conference of the Mother Teresa Institute, which officially opened earlier that day at a site adjacent to The Catholic University of America.

Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore celebrated the conference’s opening Mass on Saturday at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

Archbishop Lori, who met and worked with Mother Teresa numerous times, noted in his homily that he ‘felt the impact of her holiness’ while in her presence.’  He further spoke of her profound simplicity: ‘Mother spoke simply, clearly and directly.  And her words reflected the truth and beauty of the Gospel. What’s more, she confirmed her words by a life of prayer, self-giving love and courage.’

The conference’s featured presenters included George Weigel, who spoke about the friendship between Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II; and Father Brian Kolodiejchuk, M.C., postulator of Mother Teresa’s canonization cause.

Father Kolodiejchuk emphasized the importance of recognizing Mother Teresa not only as a remarkable saint, but as an example to emulate, whatever our state of life.

Mother Teresa maintained that ‘it is nothing extraordinary to be holy,’ Father Kolodiejchuk told conference participants.  Rather, he said, ‘What was true for Mother Teresa is true for everyone.  God has a plan for each one.  The origin and goal of this plan is God’s love. Love is the path to holiness.’

In his homily at the basilica, Cardinal Wilton Gregory, archbishop of Washington, noted that the closeness of Mother’s Teresa’s lifetime to our own serves as both an inspiration and a challenge.  ‘Mere admiration is not enough when it comes to saints who inspire our lives,’ Cardinal Gregory said.  ‘Her example must spur us all on to emulate God’s mercy in caring for those whose lives continue to be at risk.’

After Mass, Cardinal Gregory joined Supreme Knight Kelly and members of the Missionaries of Charity for the dedication of the new Mother Teresa Institute, founded to preserve the legacy of Mother Teresa and promote greater knowledge of her life and teaching.  The supreme knight presented the new institute with a gift: the original of Mother Teresa’s canonization portrait, commissioned by the Knights in 2016 and painted by artist Chas Fagan.

More than 300 people attended the U.S. premiere of Mother Teresa: No Greater Love at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine…  The film, directed by David Naglieri, spans five continents and depicts not only the remarkable life of Mother Teresa, but also the work that her Missionaries of Charity continue to do across 140 countries.

Mother Teresa: No Greater Love debuts to the public in more than 900 theaters across the United States on Monday, Oct. 3, and Tuesday, Oct. 4.  For more information, including theater locations, or to purchase tickets or view the film’s trailer, visit motherteresamovie.com.”
