Did you know this about the IW Knights of Columbus?
The Knights of Columbus are active throughout the world. Sometimes our activity is limited to the metro area in which our council is located (e.g. the Tootsie Roll drives). While other times we contribute to causes in areas where the Knights are not active but there is a definite need for aid from the outside sources (e.g. our council's recent adoption of a parish in Iraq).
During each annual Supreme Convention the Knights present four International awards - for exemplary Knights program - in the areas of Faith, Family, Community and Life. In fact, several years ago our council won an International award for exemplary Pro-Life work. We are aware of the effort it takes to win one of these awards. Over the next couple of weeks we will describe the efforts undertaken by the winning councils in each of the four areas.
Nasidman, a small island in Visayas (part of the Philippines Islands and located NW of Cebu City and about 500 miles South of Manilla) was losing its Roman Catholic identity. It had no Catholic churches, and religious sects were beginning to grow in popularity. Members of (the KofC) Our Lady of Fatima Council 10953 in Iloilo made it their mission to promote the Catholic faith and help their parish priest with any work he needed done. In less than a year, Catholicism has once again blossomed on the island. Council 10953 led the community in building a new Catholic chapel and holding popular devotions, including praying the rosary. Residents also began bringing their children to be baptized with the help of the Knights.
