Did you know this about the IW Knights of Columbus?

Tobiah Meets the Archangel Raphael, c. 1640, by Andrea Vaccaro ( 1604-1670) / HIP / Art Resource, NY

A brother Knight, Kevin Di Camillo of Brooklyn, N.Y., posted an enlightening article in this month’s Columbia (the KofC On-line edition). Can we find wisdom about the vocation of Fatherhood in the bible? Mr. Di Camillo thinks yes and points us to the Old Testament Book of Tobit.

In his article the author quotes several passages from the Book of Tobit which are certainly as appropriate to remember today as when they were written.

“Tobit says to his son, ‘When I die, give me a decent burial. Honor your mother, and do not abandon her as long as she lives’ (Tobit 4:3).”

“A series of admonitions follows: ‘Keep the Lord in mind, and suppress every desire to sin.… Perform good works all the days of your life.… Give alms from your possessions. Do not turn away from any of the poor, and God’s face will not be turned away from you. … Be on guard, son, from every form of immorality’ (4:5-12).”

The author finishes with ” I find that there is much to learn from Tobit’s compelling story and enduring wisdom.” It is a good read – only 14 chapters long.
